PorscheList
moves to Rennlist.org
Portsmouth, New Hampshire - March 1999 - Within the next twenty-four hours, all PorscheList members will be automatically moved to our new home found at:
www.rennlist.org The new site, as many have already discovered, has been under various stages of development.
Theoretically, here is what will happen before, during, and just after the move: AND PLEASE REMEMBER: If you are now a member of Porschelist, you will have to do nothing to become a member of the new site. All of your setting will remain intact and exactly as they are right now. The only minor exception will be that you *must* update your address book *after* the move. Also, here are some common questions and quick answers about this move.
Q: "How will I know when I have been transferred to Rennlist?"
A: The mail you get from the server today is stamped with PORSCHELIST.ORG in it's Reply to address. When you start receiving mail from "RENNLIST.ORG", you have been automatically upgraded. That is when you should update your address book.
Q: "How long will the systems be physically down, or off-line?"
A: It is my intent to start the process just after the Digests are sent out - or beginning approximately 03:30 EST Saturday, March 20. At that point in time, you may experience intermittent access to both sites. I am planning on a full lights out condition for less then two hours during the final uploading of all the databases, which should begin at 07:30 EST. The total estimated time to complete all the work will be approximately six hours. If everything stays on schedule, the new site should be operational by 09:30 EST. Also, after the systems are stabilized, I am planning on another outage of approximately 30 minutes 6 - 10 hours after the new site is up to re-index and re-join all the databases.
Q: "What will happen to mail sent to Porschelist during this event?"
A: If the mail is sent before 07:30 EST, it will be brought over to the new site and sent upon site initialization. BUT, if your mail is sent during the "lights out" operation, you will receive a notice to re-post it to the new site. If you receive such a notice from the PorscheList server, simply re-send your message to the Rennlist server. You will be allowed to post as your membership will be on-record at that new address.
Q: "What will happen when I browse to the PorscheList.org site with my Internet Browser after the move?"
A: Your browser will be automatically re-direct to the new site at http://www.rennlist.org - and you will see a notice before redirection to update your bookmarks. However, the site at http://www.porschelist.com will not be redirect until I begin the work to re-program that site, and therefore will be on-line with any outage whatsoever during this transition.
Q: "I have noticed that the site today is particularly fast in posting messages - why, and will it stay that way after the move to the new site?"
A: Yes - the current time to post threshold should be able to be maintained given the extensive network upgrade performed yesterday. Further, with the addition of some new features announced, and *yet* to be announced on the new site, this technology upgrade became necessary.
Q: "What will be different?"
A: There are some huge differences in both the back-end system and the actual programming. Briefly, they are: ..- The ability to interact with several of the lists as a Secure Newsgroup. I will explain more about these feature after the move. ..- There are many new filters in place that will scan messages *BEFORE* posting. If your message is sent as HTML, has an application attachment, has a virus, has a WINMAIL.DAT Signature File, or contains severe profanity - your message will be discarded and you will be sent a message as to why your message was deleted. I will track these response documents as well - so I know who is really experiencing difficulties. ..- If you access the lists on the new site, you *will* need to be a member of that list before you can enter it's search, message and archive library. This helps prevent third-party access for the sole purpose of skimming e-mail address of our list members. ..- The hotseat@rennlist.org e-mail address will be activated as well, so you can use that if you are *really* lost - but please remember, I could be sort of busy for a bit, so please be patient.
